Access to Care
AHEC support enabled health professions students training in the community
to:
• Provide 1096 children in Chester County with fluoride varnish treatments
and oral health education.
• Provide education on topics of HIV, nutrition, and depression to 26
men in a residential recovery program.
• Support the Family Fitness program with 100 participants.
• Educate 180 youths about orthopedic/spinal issues.
• Screen and educate 420 Mexican migrant workers about tobacco hazards.
• Educate 85 inner city teens about sexual health issues.
• Educate 20 patients and professionals about diabetes and associated
health issues.
• Screen and educate 60 seniors in Chester about hypertension management,
STD prevention, and safe and appropriate medication patterns.
• Provide a health fair for low income seniors with follow up of 100
attendees.
• Provide HIV education to 59 at risk teens and adults.
Education of current health professionals
• Trained 29 nurses in the care of technology dependent children in
the home.
• Trained a total of 69 staff of community health centers on the topics
of evaluation of chest pain, HIV disease, and delivery of prenatal counseling
in groups.
• Supported two Latino outreach workers to deliver health education
on mushroom farms.
• Provided 64 dental hygienists and students and 15 family medicine
residents with tobacco education and oral health continuing education programs.
• Distributed self directed learning CDs to 87 TUSM preceptors on the
topic of oral cancer screening.
Education and training of future health professionals
• Supported/facilitated the community based training of 219 medical
students, 36 physical therapy students, 37 nurse practitioners, 34 physician
assistants, and 16 allied health students.
• Supported education at LaSalle College of Nursing, Widener College
of Nursing, Arcadia University, Philadelphia University, Temple University
Departments of Nursing and Public Health, West Chester University Department
of Health, and Jefferson University College of Medicine.
• Recruited and developed 20 community physician sites for the clinical
training of Temple University School of Medicine students.
Recruitment of youths into health careers
• Supported training of 60 7th and 8th graders in a 6 week health and
research intern program at Temple University. In 2004-05, 35 students of the
high school program published in peer reviewed journals, and 30 were invited
to give oral presentations at national scientific meetings.
• Provided supplementary texts for 100 juniors and seniors in William
Penn Health Academy. Provided supplies and training materials for anatomy
and physiology labs for 75 seniors at Overbrook High School.
• Trained 10 Chester High health career students in blood pressure skills.
• Coordinated health fair and health career day at Coatesville High
School for over 300 attendees.
Developing community resources for primary care
• Secured $65,000 in grant funds for tobacco prevention and cessation
program for Latinos in Chester County.
• Secured $25,000 for after school nutrition and fitness program for
middle school girls in Chester County.
