Accomplishments

The mission of the Southeast Pennsylvania Area Health Education Center is to improve access to care for underserved populations. AHEC accomplishes this by educating and recruiting current and future health professionals and through community development.


2005-2006 Year–at–a–Glance

Improved Access to Care
AHEC support enabled health professions students training in the community to:
• Provide approximately 550 children in Chester County with fluoride varnish treatments.
• Provide two health fairs serving a total of 72 Chester city seniors.
• Deliver programs on childhood obesity at three Philadelphia schools and screen 60 children 8-10 years old.
• Deliver health education programs to 67 men in the St. Elizabeth’s Recovery Program and Project HOME.
• Deliver physical therapy related education and screening to 200 children, pregnant women in shelters, and seniors.

AHEC support enabled community health professionals to:
• Deliver, in a six month period, breast health sessions to 200 Latinas and arrange for 60 Latinas to receive free mammograms.
• Deliver 79 tobacco prevention sessions to 858 Latino adults and youths. Enabled 34 Latinos to complete a smoking cessation program.

Education of current health professionals
• Trained 21 nurses (150 in the last three years) to care for technology dependent children in the home.
• Delivered two accredited programs of Public Health Preparedness 101 for the Primary Care Physician to a total of 12 physicians.
• Supported a conference entitled Coatesville Area Interfaith Summit: The State of HIV/AIDS in Chester County for 31 professionals.
• Distributed dental education packets entitled Tobacco Cessation and Intervention Continuing Dental Education Series to 50 dentists in Bucks and Montgomery counties.

Education and training of future health professionals
• Recruited 43 community based preceptors to train 70 second year Temple University medical students.
• Supported community based clinical training for 111 graduate and undergraduate nurses from LaSalle University, Widener University, and Temple University.
• Provided training at Community Volunteers in Medicine (CVIM) for six senior students from Temple University School of Dentistry and four dental hygiene students from Harcum Dental Hygiene program.
• Supported training sites with educational materials for approximately 34 Philadelphia University physician assistant (PA) students implementing 15-16 different community health projects.
• Supported educational materials and models for health education programs delivered by medical students and residents from Thomas Jefferson University’s JeffHOPE program to persons in homeless shelters and addiction recovery centers.
• Supported community based training for 51 Arcadia University physical therapy students.


Recruitment of youths into health careers

• Supplied health career educational materials and reference books for students in the Health Science Learning Community of the Norristown School District, which has an enrollment of 325 students.
• Supported activities and supplies for 40 students at the Chester High School Health Academy and assisted with the planning of a certified nurse assistant (CNA) course.
• Supported the Physician Scientist Training Program (PSTP) with lab chemicals and supplies for 92 seventh and eighth graders.
• Supported health career planners for William Penn High School (195 students) and Overbrook High School (270 students) Health Academies.

Developing community resources for primary care
Successfully solicited funds in the amount of $169,180 from private and public agencies including: the Brandywine Foundation, Chester County Health Department, the Christopher Reeve Foundation, the Susan G. Komen Foundation, PA Department of Environmental Education, and the Seybert Foundation. These funds supported the following:
• A training program for nurses who care for technology dependent children in the home
• An after school nutrition and fitness program for girls in the Coatesville School District
• A breast cancer screening and outreach program for Latinos in Chester County
• An environmental education program for staff and parents at six child care centers in Philadelphia
• A tobacco prevention education and cessation program for Latinos in Chester County
