Year At A Glance 2009-2010

Improved Access to Care

AHEC support enabled health professions students training in the community to:

  • Provide approximately 1100 children in Chester County with fluoride varnish treatments.
  • Deliver physical therapy related education and screening to 160 clients for Down’s syndrome, breast cancer, juvenile diabetes, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, lupus and end stage renal disease.

AHEC support enabled community health professionals to:

  • Deliver, breast health sessions to 540 Latinas and arrange for 67 Latinas to receive free mammograms.
  • Enable 37 Latinos to complete a smoking cessation program.

Education of current health professionals

  • Educated  289 health  professionals on  topics including: the delivery of oral and behavioral health services in the primary care setting; nicotine addiction treatment; adult obesity; the medical home; and electronic medical records.

Education and training of future health professionals

  • Retained 40 community based preceptors to train 186 second year Temple University School of Medicine students.
  • Supported community based clinical training for 44 graduate and nurses from LaSalle University, Widener University, and Temple University.  The students trained at clinical sites throughout north Philadelphia, Chester City, and lower Bucks County where they conducted health screenings and health education programs.
  • Provided community based training at Community Volunteers in Medicine (CVIM) for 14 senior dental students from Temple University School of Dentistry and 15 dental hygiene students from Harcum and Montgomery County Community Colleges.

Recruitment of youths into health careers

  • Provided equipment for 85 students at Chester High School Health Academy for preparation for their 1st emergency medical exam and for 40 students to attend the Delaware County  Health Career Fair.
  • Supported the Physician Scientist Training Program (PSTP) with lab chemicals and supplies for the 62 ninth and tenth graders of the 2009 session.
  • Supported health career planners for Martin Luther King High School (80 students) and Overbrook High School (80students) Health Academies as well educational supplies and field trips to local hospitals.

Development of community resources for primary care

Successfully solicited funds in the amount of $100,000 from private and public agencies including:, Health Promotion Council, The Susan G. Komen Philadelphia Affiliate and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.  These funds supported the following:

  • breast cancer screening and outreach program for Latinas in Chester County
  • a tobacco prevention education and cessation program for  Latinos in Chester County
  • creating environmentally friendly child care centers through a train the trainer program
